Community Service Awards Presented to Latino Leaders

By La Luz Center - Five members of the Latino community were recognized for their outstanding community service in the Sonoma Valley last night at a gathering of La Luz Center donors in the home of Tom and JaMel Perkins.  “The awards were the first of what we plan to be an annual tradition”, said Ellen LaBruce, executive director of La Luz. The recipients for 2005 were:

Limbania Campos – for her work with the annual Day of the Dead cultural exhibit at the Sonoma Valley Museum of Art.

Alejandra Cervantes – for nonprofit board service at La Luz Center and her work with Nuestra Voz, which is Spanish for “Our Voice”, a grass roots group dedicated to creating Latino Leadership.

Fortino Reyes – for helping families struggling with alcoholism and substance abuse with local  recovery groups in Spanish.

José Fernandez – for participation in Promotores de Salud as a peer health counselor spreading information about good health practices to Latinos.

Maricarmen Reyes – for her work in education of recent immigrants and adults earning their high school diploma and programs for at-risk youth.

“These are folks who work tirelessly to make our multicultural community a strong and healthy one,” said LaBruce. “La Luz supports their efforts in various ways such as  providing meeting space and materials, collaborating on events and helping get the word out about their projects. We applaud their efforts to improve the quality of life for all residents of  Sonoma Valley. ”
