The median income of Latinos remains far below that of other Californians: nearly 23% of Latinos live in poverty, compared to 8% of non-Latinos. 40% of Latinos lack health insurance compared to 15% of non-Hispanic whites. About 45% of Latinos in the workforce have less than a high-school education, compared to 8 % of non-Latinos.
La Luz's Community Services program is an effort to connect people with important and basic resources in order to meet essential needs like food, housing and work. Family Advocates work with immigrants to help them develop problem solving strategies and to facilitate communication with employers and landlords. La Luz’s educational programs include instruction in English, Computer skills, the challenges of parenting and financial literacy. La Luz encourages academic success in young people by presenting achievement awards to students in the elementary and middle schools and by providing college scholarships to immigrant students - many are the first in their family to graduate from high school.
