ABOUT LA LUZ
Our Story
In 1985, Sonoma Valley's flourishing wine industry attracted workers from Latin America. These workers, seeking community, often congregated at church where they met Ligia Booker, a Colombian philanthropist who recognized their needs.
While immediate necessities like food and language skills were evident, complex issues such as medical, legal, and financial assistance posed long-term challenges. In response, Ligia and some Sonoma residents established La Luz ("The Light"), aiming to offer necessary support to these families.
As years passed, La Luz Center expanded, strengthened by community alliances and a dedicated staff, offering a plethora of services and programs. Today, the Latino community, forming around 28% of Sonoma Valley's population and making up 64% of public school enrollment, plays a crucial role in the region's prosperity.
La Luz Center remains a beacon, actively supporting this community's vitality in Sonoma Valley.
